AJRA’s rowers turned perseverance into podium finishes at the season opener.
After months of relentless winter training, the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association officially launched its 2026 Spring campaign with a powerful showing at the American Youth Cup I in Sarasota.
Braving a long, cold winter that still included valuable water time in December, January, and early February, AJRA athletes entered the season battle-tested. Intense seat racing across both the men’s and women’s squads sharpened lineups and elevated internal competition — producing exceptionally fast 1V and 2V boats ready for their first major test.
That test came in Sarasota, and AJRA delivered.
The Men’s 1V 8+ powered to a second-place finish, while the Women’s 1V 8+ secured third in a highly competitive field. Both 2V eights captured silver medals, underscoring the program’s depth and speed beyond the top boats.
Additional standout performances included:
Women’s Straight 4 — Gold Medal
Mens 4+ – Silver Medal
Men’s U17 8+ — Gold Medal
Men’s Youth Pair — Bronze Medal
The results reflect not just early-season speed, but the strength of the entire roster. The competitive winter seat racing process created boats that are both technically sharp and mentally tough — capable of executing under pressure.
Women's Head Coach Maddux Castle said "The women's squad had a pretty exciting set of results from our weekend in Sarasota. Competitive times and placements in the eights, as well as a mix of professionally-handled and sometimes surprising results in the smaller boats rounded out a trip that went as well as could be planned. The ever-dynamic weather in Sarasota created valuable lessons for the squad with regards to race planning for a whole weekend; lessons that will serve us well as we continue to tour around the southeast in our campaign toward Regionals. In addition, the endeavour of traveling to Florida with the whole team is always contingent on the hard work and dedication of our parent volunteers, and they showed up in force (as always!) to support the team's racing and kept the wheels spinning smoothly! A big thank you from the coaching staff to everyone who put their efforts towards the team's success! "
With these results in Sarasota setting the tone, AJRA now turns its focus to the heart of the spring schedule. The foundation laid through winter conditioning and internal competition is already translating into podium finishes.
