AJRA Has Club's Best Ever Showing at Youth Nationals

AJRA qualified three boats to compete June 10-12 against the nation’s elite high school and junior club teams at the 2011 US Rowing Youth National Championships.  A talented field of more than 1,500 rowers representing 148 teams and 23 states were on hand for the event, held at Oak Ridge, TN for the first time.
Our Varsity Wo men’s 8+ qualified for the most competitive women’s event at Nationals but, after tough races in heats and reps (the first two rounds) failed to advance.  Their overall finish places them among the top 24 Women’s V8s in the country.

AJRA’s Varsit y Women’s pair (Meghan Paulo and Leslie Anne Mall) and Varsity Men’s Lightweight 4+ (coxswain Mitchell Miller and rowers Matt Cecil, Zach Lawhon, Kevin O’Donnell, and Connor Smith) both advanced to semi-finals — marking the first time in AJRA’s history that two boats have earned a spot in semi-final races.  Both events saw some of the fastest times ever posted in those races.  The pair found speed and confidence throughout the weekend and were able to finish 5th in their semi and progress to the B (Petite) Final, where their fifth place finish makes them the 11th fastest Varsity Women’s pair in the nation.  “With Meghan and Leslie Anne both returning,” said Coach Bryce Carlson, “they will be bringing back speed and experience gained at Nationals to AJRA next season.”

Five AJRA Rowers Selected for Jr. National Camps

Five women from AJRA have been invited to attend US Rowing National Team summer camps designed to identify and prepare the next generation of rowers to represent the United States at World Championship and Olympic competition.

Two members of AJRA’s Varsity Women’s squad were selected to attend the 2011 Junior National Team Selection Camp – Maddie Wilson and Sarah Hudnall. Two other Varsity Women were invited to attend the Junior Worlds Development Camp – Maggie Nugent and Hannah Onians. Aja List, a member of AJRA’s Novice Women’s squad, also was selected for the Development Camp.

These “invitation only” camps provide a development opportunity for high school girls who have met defined athletic standards for their age and demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level. The camps are held June 15-July 1 at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct. Top athletes from these camps will be selected for the 2011 Junior National Team, 2012 Junior Worlds Development Team or to represent the US at Club Nationals this summer. Junior National team rowers will compete in August at the World Championships in Eton, Great Britain, while the 2012 Junior World Development squad will train and compete in Berlin with the German Junior National Team.

“The selection of five AJRA athletes for the Jr. National Team system this year is a major accomplishment for our club,” said AJRA Varsity Women’s Coach Bryce Carlson. “These invitations recognize the depth of talent in our program with five of the top female high school rowers in the nation competing here at AJRA.”
