It’s a tradition!   The race was started in 1996 and gets its name from the famed British Henley Regatta — the longest running sporting event in the world.  The Henley on the Hooch is back again, set this year for Saturday, Nov. 12.   Our annual race allows AJRA to go head-to-head in a little “friendly competition” with St. Andrew.  But, make no mistake-our AJRA rowers take it pretty seriously.  AJRA has won the Coaches Cup for the past seven consecutive years, and we don’t intend to stop now!

This is a great opportunity for friends and family to see rowing first hand right on our home stretch of the Chattahoochee, and close enough to get a good photo, too.  Food will be available for rowers and families.  Races are scheduled from approximately 8:50 a.m.- 11:40 p.m., followed by the trophy presentation at 12:20 p.m.  Exhibitions by the AJRA Developmental Squad will be held beginning at 8:00 a.m.  Here is the final race schedule but note that all rowers are expected to be present for the entire event.   Go AJRA!

This is it!  Our most competitive regatta of the Fall Season is this weekend, November 5th – 6^th in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  2011  marks the 31st anniversary of the Head of the Hooch, which is the second largest regatta in the country.

The Atlanta Rowing Club organized a head race in 1981 called the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta in front of their boathouse in Roswell, Georgia. The first race hosted only 105 boats. The regatta drew increasing numbers of rowers each year. By 1998 almost 500 boats raced in one day. The wait at the docks to launch and recover was becoming too long and trailers were stacked up in the park and on both sides of the adjacent Azalea Drive for more than a half-mile.

The Head of the Hooch Regatta, previously known as the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta, is now a 2-day regatta held annually in Chattanooga. The Head of the Hooch Regatta is a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. All boats are started sequentially and will race against the clock. It ranks as the second largest rowing regatta in the United States with over 9000 rowers and nearly 2000 boats entered for the 2011 event. More than 1200 of the boats race on Saturday alone, more than any other US regatta on a single day.  Competitors each year come from over 30 States and several foreign countries. The athletes’ ages span from high school crews to adult masters rowers aged 70 and above.

We hope to see plenty of parents and families at the beautiful Chattanooga Riverfront venue.   Please look for the AJRA tents and come cheer on our athletes.  There will be 1,600+ crews competing at all levels.  We are looking forward to watching some great rowing!
