Online registration for AJRA’s winter conditioning programs for new and returning Varsity and Novice rowers is now open. Don’t miss this opportunity to stay fit and improve strength and conditioning over the winter months. Space is limited — don’t wait! Varsity registration closes Nov. 17. Novice registration closes Jan. 1.

To register, click on the Winter Conditioning button on the top right of this page. You can then view details about dates, times, location, fees, and required forms for each program.

Please note that we are piloting a new registration system. To register, you will have to create a new account. Only credit card payment will be accepted for winter conditioning programs. The convenience fee covers AJRA’s costs for registration and credit card processing.

AJRA Races Well at Secret City

AJRA continued to build on our fall campaign with a great day of racing at the Secret City Head Race in Oak Ridge, Tenn. this past Saturday. After a fog delay of several hours, regatta organizers and officials worked together to provide a compressed schedule that would still provide a high-quality race experience for all competitors, and all AJRA crews took advantage by racing several times throughout the day.

The novice women led the team in results, with medal finishes in every event they entered. The squad brought home a gold medal in the Women’s Lightweight 4+, as well as silver medals in the Women’s Novice 8+ and 4+. A small group of varsity men and all novice men also traveled to Oak Ridge, racing competitively in six events, and were led by a bronze-medal finish in the Men’s Lightweight 8+.

Two Varsity Rowers Earn US Rowing Scholastic Recognition

AJRA Varsity Women’s coxswain Zoe Canaras, a senior at Milton High School, has been named to US Rowing Association’s 2013-14 Scholastic Honor Roll. In addition, Varsity Men’s rower Chris West, a senior at The Lovett School, received Honorable Mention recognition.

The US Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. Applicants must be US Rowing members, have rowed or served as coxswain at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. This is the 23^th year of the award.

US Rowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the US Olympic Committee as the governing body of the sport of rowing in the United States. The US Rowing Youth Advisory Committee selected the winners based on a numerical ranking of their grades in core academic classes, ACT or SAT scores, and class rank, if applicable.

AJRA Makes Strong Showing at Head of Charles Regatta

Our Varsity Women’s 8+ represented the club well at the 49th annual Head of the Charles Regatta on October 19th! Despite not having been on the water to practice for several weeks because of the federal shutdown, the AJRA entry placed 42nd out of 85 boats in a competitive field on a difficult course. The top half finish earns AJRA a guaranteed entry for next year’s Head of the Charles. Way to go, Varsity Women!

The VW rowers also were featured in a Boston TV newscast about the

Looking for some AJRA Spirit Wear for the upcoming regattas? Want to get a jump start on holiday gifts? Join us at the end of practice this Thursday, October 24 from 6:30 to 7:15 to make your purchases.

We will have sweatshirts, t shirts, car magnets, stickers, tattoos and other items for sale. We will also be taking special orders for long sleeve shirts, pajama pants, rugbys, travel bags, AJRA bandanas and bucket hats which will be delivered before the end of the season.

Chattanooga Head Race Provides Valuable Experience

On Oct. 12, all four AJRA racing squads packed up and headed to

Tennessee for the Chattanooga Head Race. The

regatta provided a great opportunity for AJRA rowers to practice on

the water, as the Chattahoochee River is currently off-limits to all

local rowing clubs.

Both novice squads got their first taste of racing for the year, and

even with little experience, were able to show great results. The

novice women entered four eights, led by the A boat with a 2nd place

finish. The novice men also had a strong day, entering three eights,

with the A boat finishing 4th before a penalty and final placement of

9th overall.

The varsity squads continued to build on their fall season, racing in

both fours and eights and continuing to show strength from top to

bottom. The varsity women provided the highlight of the day for AJRA,

winning the Youth Women’s 8+ event after a close 2nd-place finish last

weekend. The varsity men followed up with a 2nd-place in the Youth

Men’s 8+.

Parent Social at Chattanooga Head Race

This Saturday, Oct. 12, is the 1st full-squad regatta of the Fall 2013 season at the Chattanooga Head Race. Let’s bring everyone together at the AJRA food tent!

While the food tent is normally just for the rowers, parents will have a separate table at this regatta only so we’ll have a place to gather and have something to eat too. Just bring an appetizer, salad or dessert to share. Paper goods, water and soda will be provided.

Instead of scattering along the wall at the race facility, we invite all parents to come back to the AJRA tent between races so we can get to know each other a little better.

AJRA Varsity Men rowers and coxswains at Head of Oklahoma

AJRA split the varsity teams this weekend in order to compete in two separate regattas, and came back to Atlanta with great early-season results.

The men’s varsity 8+ went to Oklahoma City for the first time in AJRA history to race in the Head of the Oklahoma. The varsity men had an opportunity to race several times throughout the weekend, gaining significant race experience and earning a few medals along the way.

On Saturday, the AJRA V8 raced in the Men’s Youth 8+, finishing 2nd, and raced again that evening in a 500-meter sprint against collegiate teams, finishing 1st. Sunday, the same varsity men split into two Men’s Youth 4+’s, finishing 1st and 7th in a very competitive race.

The rest of the varsity men’s squad, as well as the whole varsity

women’s team, traveled to this year’s Tail of the Tiger regatta. Since

AJRA only raced varsity teams, it was a great opportunity for

all rowers to get a few trips down the racecourse and get back into

the swing of fall racing.

The depth of the AJRA varsity program was on full display in Clemson,

where even with the top 8 varsity rowers racing in Oklahoma, the A-

and B-entries in the Men’s Youth 8+ still finished first and second.

Additionally, the women’s varsity 8+’s finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th,

narrowly missing a podium sweep in the event, in addition to many

other medal-winning placements for both squads.
